Fresh Water: A Desperate Need

Providing fresh water to the Maasai villages in Narok County, Kenya is important, and not easy. The areas within most of the Great Rift Valley have no known useable underground water reservoirs.

In Narok and Kajiado Counties, the months of April, May & June usually have what is referred to as the "Long Rains." However, life gets much tougher during August - March. Water is carried for many kilometers.

Many Maasai rely on seasonal surface water, which they share with both their livestock and with wild animals.

One way to provide fresh water to villages is to transport it with a tanker truck like these pictured. This method is reliable, but expensive. However, when the drought it severe, bringing water in through this method can often mean the difference between life & death.

Our first fresh water well compound, was completed in 2022. The downhole pump is solar powered. Guards are necessary 24/7 for security. This is the only source of reliable high quality fresh water in the area, and is improving the health of all who drink it, cook with it, or wash with this clean water.

If you have interest in supporting the Maasai with fresh-water initiatives like this, please visit our Maasai Vision page and consider becoming a donor.
